Intro...
Welcome one and all to overheardinworld.com, rest your feet weary travellers of the web and stay a while. Like many purveyors of the interweb i was jaded at the lack of intriguing websites to peruse, when i happened upon www.overheardindublin.com (no affiliation). This was my first introduction to the world of what some would call collaborative blogs. However, I think that particular label sounds unbelievably boring and belies the fact that some of these sites can have you rolling around in stiches with your sides splitting and your face hurting from laughter.
The premise of the Dublin site and the original granddaddy of them all www.inpassing.org is that everyone and anyone can submit funny stories, snippets of dialogue or anything else they may overhear from the conversation of others. As most of us are forced togther at work, on public transport at concerts and sporting events etc.. we are all subjected to random comments, funny situations and bizarre one sided phone conversations. These sites are places to share these with the world. Cultural differences are also apparaent as The Irish sites I've seen tend to be more story based and anecdotal while the New York site tends to focus more on dialogue. The content of each site can reflect the attitudes and ethnic makeup of each location which is interesting on a social and cultural level. Anyway enough blathering from me, go and check some of them out for yourself.
What the hell is this about?
Ok, i made this site because i couldnt find a decent list of all sites of this kind anywhere, there might be a better one out there now as i took so long it getting this together (having a job gets in the way of most things!). Fair enough it's just a glorified rip off of a Yahoo directory page list but i thought it would be cool to graphically show the spread (or not) of this particular phenomenon and hopefully it will grow and become better than even that yahoo page (one can dream). As i speak only english (for shame, for shame) i'm not aware of similar sites in non english speaking countries but i'll gladly list them.
